The course provides general information about the worldviews of political thinkers in history, from Herodotus to Foucault. The course then explores the thoughts of all political thinkers under the following headings: Politics and Order , Politics and Virtue , Politics and Freedom, Politics, Happiness and Welfare, Rule by a Single Person, The Rule of the Few, The Rule of the Many, The Sanctions of 'Nature', Mixed Government, Balanced Constitutions and the Separation of Powers, Absolute Government, The Rule of Law and Rule-Bound Orders, Resisting Unjust Rulers , Revolutionary Political Thought, Theories of Civil Disobedience and Non-Violent Resistance to Political Authority. The course presents a general assessment to be held in the last week following the comparison of western and Islamic thought.
